Three questions about spring weed control

Want to ensure you're getting the most out of seeding?

It’s early May and seeding is in full swing across most of the Prairies. 

This means you have a good amount of time to get seeding accomplished, but you may have felt the need to seed ahead of a pre-seed burndown. This is definitely what Cargill’s team of agronomists are seeing in their territories.

With that in mind, here are three questions to ask yourself to ensure you’re getting both good weed control and an early seeding date:

When did you last apply herbicide? Fall 2020 was no picnic, and weather conditions prevented many farmers from applying a fall herbicide. This could mean some fields haven’t seen herbicide since last June, and it has created a perfect environment for winter annuals to establish and thrive.

Have you walked your fields? Weeds in the field may be larger and/or more plentiful than it appears from your truck, meaning you could have a bigger challenge on your hands than you may realize.

Did you choose seeding date over pre-seed weed control? We get it. In many cases, an earlier seeding date can make for a more competitive crop early on. If this is the case, get into the field in the pre-emergence stage to hit your emerging weeds before they rob your crop of precious moisture and nutrients.
